HSDPA vs HSUPA | difference between HSDPA and HSUPA

This page HSDPA vs HSUPA describes difference between HSDPA and HSUPA.It explains basics of HSDPA and HSUPA and mentions useful difference between terms. It also highlights features of HSPA+.

These technologies are upgrade to WCDMA which was supporting about 3.6Mbps in the downlink and 384Kbps in the uplink. The devices which support these technologies are called HSDPA modem and HSUPA modem. Both HSDPA and HSUPA falls under HSPA. HSPA+ supports speeds of 84Mbps in the downlink and about 23Mbps in the uplink. HSPA+ follows 3GPP R7,R8 and R9 standards. HSPA+ will support MIMO, higher modulation scheme 64QAM(Downlink) and 16QAM(Uplink) and have layer2 enhancement as flexible PDU size. HSPA+ also support CPC(Continuous Packet Connectivity). HSPA+ supports VOIP and CS voice over HSPA network.

Specifications HSDPA HSUPA
Full form High Speed Downlink Packet Access High Speed Uplink Packet Access
3GPP Standard Release 5 Release 6
Applications Video download, video conferencing big file upload
Direction Downlink, From network to Mobile side Uplink, from mobile to network side
Modulation QPSK, 16QAM(IN older HSDPA systems only QPSK supported) QPSK
Data rate 7.2Mbps(previous)/14.4 Mbps About 5.76 Mbps
Physical channel E-HICH(Enhanced Hybrid Indicator Channel), E-AGCH(Enhanced Absolute Grant Channel) and E-RGCH(Enhanced Relative Grant Channel) are added in the downlink. HS-PDSCH(High Speed Physical Downlink Shared Channel) upgraded here compare to WCDMA E-DPDCH(Enhanced Dedicated Physical Data Channel) and E-DPCCH (Enhanced Dedicated Physical Control Channel) are added to previous 3G(WCDMA) system in uplink
MAC layer Supports MAC-hs protocol which has H-ARQ and rate adaption features. H-ARQ takes care of retransmission of erroneous blocks. Newly added E-DCH transport channel supports MAC-e/es sublayer. MAC-e sublayer has HARQ,demultiplexing and fast scheduling functionalities. MAC-es takes care of re-ordering,combining & dis-assembly of PDUs.
TTI(Transmission Time Interval) 2 ms (R99 supported 10ms as shortest TTI) 2 ms,10 ms
